Circa 600 miles , 9 hours with a 1 hour stop on the way for Brunch and for a diversion due to a 6 mile tailback from a crash on the I10 was not too bad -- so that is now 5 out of the 9 states we have been through or are in. So today and tomorrow it is the Lone star state -- Texas and here in the amazing city with the Riverwalk at basement level --- more to come on that later.
As to yesterday and the trip down , I think I was the only thing that was getting excited -- well , when you miss the turning on a couple of occasions that mean you have to divert around and around again it is reasons to be excited -- actually it was on the occasion where I was trying to be a smart arse and take what I thought would be a good alternative. Like all good ideas like this I hadn't bargained on the fact that those locals in the know had also done the same.
Amazing how the land changes from state to state and the fact that you learn things that you had no idea before -- like growing vast quantities of RICE in Louisiana and south Texas.
Baton Rouge was where traffic problems started but we did start to see mile after hundred miles of rice paddies.
This was the process plant that dealt with the end product.
So a new piece of information to share -- lucky you.
So we did have to cross lots more water
Great engineering to have so many freeways on stilts through the swamps -- I wonder what it must have been like for the workers who constructed these when you have High temperatures, Humidity, all the bugs in the world and pretty much every snake and critter that would harm humans sniffing around daily.
With all the Power needed its as no surprise to see power plants and chemical / oil and gas plants in many of the views we had on the way along into Texas. The good thing of course is that they have the resources and land to build them on
I was trying very unsuccessfully to think of a -- Houston , We Have A Problem " line but it's just not coming.
So onwards to the Embassy Suites in San Antonio -- home of the Alamo-- even if you remove the romantic version from the film , the fact that so few men fought and held up a 10,000 + army of trained soldiers until General Houston put an army together , to defeat the Mexicans -- and these guys , once inside the old mission , pretty much knowing and guaranteeing that they would die, still fought on-- and how many times in history has that happened -- The 300 as an example-- I am in awe of that kind of bravery --- or is that stupidity ?. Well , depending on where you come from, it might be a very different world today if these type of men had not make the ultimate sacrifice.
So we got in around 7pm and after dumping the bags we just had to go down for a refreshing drink or two and a plate of nibbles-- very nice -- our type of happy hour as its all free.
So back to the room and for me a hot shower a good book for about 2 pages and an early night in our penthouse -- 17th floor.
If there is a problem at all it must be that the bed is so big you could have hidden a family of illegal immigrants in it and still not come across them -- I mean I kept getting up thinking that Lynda must be in the other room only to find she appeared out of what was her side of the bed-- I mean huge bed.
So thats it for now -- on the 2nd May we will head on down to the Alamo mission, maybe strolling around we might just find a store or two that might be worth a wander and then back for a soak in the pool and hot tub.
Tough life but someone has to do it.
