Yesterday morning Lynda and I were thinking of the variety of things that we could do yesterday and in the end decided to go visit the Queen Mary ship at Long Beach , which also had an exhibition of the Princess Diana collection.
In Hindsight, I have to say probably the best choice we could have made--loads of photos to come and I will put a folder onto the "Full Profile " soon but what a great piece of history to get the chance to visit.
Just one thing form Lynda and me-- Thank you America for taking this beautiful ship and finding a very good commercial use for it that would leave it still available for the public to be able to see around---because for sure we in the uk would have scrapped it for the value of the metal--baring in mind that around the late 60's and early 70's there were poor economic conditions back there---miners strikes etc.
Still----- here we were ----
This is a combination of a Hotel, Conferencing Centre, Wedding location, and Historical Exhibition.
With Lyndas regards for Diana, it could not have been better timing to see this exhibition, as it is on tour over the next weeks months.
The Americans found time to slip a little Russian submarine into the opportunity for visitors to see
Ok , so they wouldn't let me clamber up to do a Titanic pose---be there are a few thousand who have also tried.
The weather was good despite reports to the contrary.
This was Lynda ignoring the rules of no cameras---well no-one was around anyway.
This is the Wedding chapel although there is an outside location like a garden arbour.
The grand ballroom.
So I doubt that everyone will know who tis couple is so for those who don't know, this is the Duke of Windsor , with American, Wallace Simpson who married despite parliament wanting that they did otherwise and Edward decided not to become king when his father died.
These guys were always in the limelight , especially with the celebrity circuit of film stars and entertainers.
They were the big attraction when the Liner sailed to and from America.
Here is a great photo of me and the boss and a nice way to end the trip around
For the history buffs among anyone daft enough to be reading this blog--the Queen Mary was decommissioned when they took the liner from Southampton to Long Beach in 1967 and it spent 4 years in dry dock getting converted into what it is today before being positioned in its final resting place in 1971.
So who the hell is this Tony I hear someone say--or maybe that was just my head echoing allowed----well us and Tony ( and Ann & Rod), go back to the first time we ever flew out of the States about 10 years ago from LAX, and we found this place to kill a few hours and to have a real great lunch.
Then we did it again when we stayed at the end of the holiday at The Bilbao Inn in Bilbao Village below Newport Beach.
But you know what, Lynda and I had not checked on any map so only thought we knew where it was located so that we could get a late lunch there so we went here---
Oh and this is right on the beach---I keep saying---they do not care---but imagine this next to Brighton Pier---
We saw this hotel where we stayed before and then headed back to LA---
We ate here before---
So in the end we ended up back in Glendale for food around 7pm---this is via the tortures of endeavouring to drive on the 710 and the I-5--
They will not sort out the road signs and last night I got a bit fed up trying to guess which way---- Ok so trying to get onto the 710 and following the sign for going north to go "this Way" well about 5 miles later I decided to turn around and go back and got on to the interstate easily from that direction---what I didn't realise is that any left hand turn would have taken us up to eventually meet the 710.
I only seam to have this issue in and around cities with massive intersections but please Mr City Fathers, one or two more signs for us Brits would be great---thanks.
Ok , so tiring day and lots to do today so better get busy--Got the boss breakfast in bed so in the good books already--- Happy Sundays------
